‘Wait,’ said Haze. ‘This is where you’ve been staying?’

He felt horrified, and horrifically guilty. When Winter had first arrived here, he’d given her a few items to help her settle in — a sleeping bag and some candles and things to make her comfortable. But he’d been so preoccupied with the damn generator issue that he hadn’t even thought to check out her living accommodation. The poor girl had been sleeping in something resembling a mausoleum.

‘Isn’t it great?’ said Winter, bouncing around. ‘This is where my spider friend lives.’ She pointed to a large web in the corner. ‘I call him Larry.’ She gestured at a bunch of herbs on the windowsill. ‘And these bananas and berries are meant to attract fruit bats, but I haven’t had any luck so far—’

‘Wait, are you serious? You’re trying to attract bats into your bedroom?’

‘Yeah, one or two,’ said Winter. She stopped to pick something up. ‘This is Vlad.’

Haze almost jumped out of skin, before realizing that Vlad was just a fake bat. A stuffie.

‘Oh, jeez. Hello, Vlad. Nice to meet you.’ He extended a hand and shook Vlad’s wing.

Winter giggled. ‘I’ve never shown him to anybody before. But I figured you’d be OK with him.’

‘Where are your other toys?’ asked Haze.

Winter shrugged. ‘I don’t have many. I have a few more stuffies, and a toy train over there.’ She pointed to a small, scratched, metal train, no bigger than Haze’s fist. ‘But it’s kinda old and it’s missing a wheel now.’

‘It’s a great little train,’ said Haze. ‘An antique… but… surely you have more than this?’

‘My parents were Math teachers. More interested in teaching me times tables than giving me, like, Furbies, or whatever.’

‘Winter,’ Haze said thoughtfully. ‘I was planning on bringing you up here and making you come harder than you’ve ever come in your life. But there’s something I need to do first.’

Winter frowned. ‘You’re leaving?’

‘Yes, I’m afraid so,’ said Haze. ‘And you’re coming with me.’

Winter gripped Vlad tightly. ‘Have I done something wrong? Are you upset with me, Daddy?’

His heart glowed hearing that name.

Daddy.

The name that made him feel like a billion dollars. No. Not a billion dollars. To compare it to money was just to cheapen it. The name he couldn’t put a price on. Worth more than money itself.

‘I’m not upset with you, sweetie,’ said Haze. ‘But there’s something I need to do for you. Urgently.’

‘There is?’

‘Come on,’ said Haze, holding out his hand. ‘I’m taking you on a trip.’

‘Where?’

Haze grinned. ‘You’ll see.’
